Taoyuan Municipal Shou Shan Senior High School

The Advertisement Design Department of Taoyuan Municipal Shou Shan Senior High School was established in 2011. Over the past ten years, the teachers and students have worked together to accomplish many successes. Most of the students have no basic knowledge of drawing and design when they enter the school, but after three years of training and being taught by teachers who have integrated their experience in the industry, the students have demonstrated their creativity that is comparable to college students’. In 2020, the department’s work “I Shape Puppetry” won the German Red Dot Design Award, the first public high school in Taiwan to win the award. In 2022, we won the award again with “Brick God.” For three consecutive years, we have won the Gold Medal in the Graphic Design category of the Taoyuan Design Award. The school’s annual exhibition and graduation project exhibition demonstrate the students’ cross-disciplinary design thinking and practical achievements.

Wo Xing'ousu (The Eight Immortals Paper Doll)
Inspired by the high cost and inaccessibility of traditional glove puppets, this design presents the legend of "The Eight Immortals Cross the Sea" using paper dolls. By making their own paper dolls, users can personally experience and pass on the beauty of traditional cultural stories.
Initially, we chose Taiwanese representative glove puppets as the content setting, combining traditional puppet theater performance art to narrate folk stories. By presenting "glove puppet paper dolls" through an innovative medium and transforming them into illustrations, we not only learned cultural and creative knowledge that is not taught in the classroom but also gained a deeper understanding of traditional culture. This approach also increased students' appreciation for Taiwanese culture.

The design aims to educate players about local culture and archaeological expertise through "game-based learning" and "cognitive analysis".
Combining the Dayuanjianshan Historical Site in Taoyuan, which is located within the grounds of Dayuan Elementary School and dates back over 2,800 years, this site features rich "deposits" from the late Neolithic "Yuanshan Culture" and "Zhi-Wu-Yuan" (Botanical Garden Culture), as well as "artifacts" such as brown pottery from the mid-Neolithic "Shun-tan-pu Culture". Excavated items include pottery shards, pottery jars, stone knives, and net weights. However, some of the site remains buried under modern buildings, making further excavation difficult and leaving it sealed within layers of history.

BELIEF
The Donggang Wangye Worshiping Ceremony in Donggang Township, Pingtung County, Taiwan, is a well-known local festival. The associated tradition of burning the Wangye boat was included in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2020.
In Taiwan, many local folk cultures and intangible cultural heritage are often overlooked. BELIEF focuses on the theme of "boat burning" and the Donggang Wangye Worshiping Ceremony. We have divided the entire festival process into twelve steps and presented these steps using seal engraving and rice paper, which are also forms of intangible cultural heritage, to emphasize the importance of preserving intangible cultural heritage.

容貌焦慮 F.A.C.E.

F.A.C.E. (Facial Anxiety)
"Facial Anxiety" is a psychological condition where individuals feel dissatisfied and lacking confidence about their appearance. The arrival of COVID-19 led many to wear masks, but as the pandemic subsided, people became anxious about removing their masks, equating it with the need to "maintain perfect appearance at all times".
The five posters on "Facial Anxiety" highlight the five most valued facial features: eyes, nose, lips, skin, and hair. This approach conveys the dissatisfaction of those with appearance anxiety towards their own features and calls for a rejection of viewing "others' aesthetic standards" as the ultimate measure.

Dream Shine – The Former Taoyuan Air Base Facilities by Design

“Dream˙Shine” – The Former Taoyuan Air Base Facilities by Design
Taoyuan Air Base, a historical site for the Republic of China Air Force, witnessed Taiwan's WWII and Cold War eras. The future plan is to preserve seven major facilities as historical monuments.
The Black Cat Squadron, which flew U-2 reconnaissance aircraft from the base between 1961 and 1974, completed 220 missions. The design aims to serve an educational purpose, narrating the memories of the airbase and its pilots.
The core concept is to "trace the legacy of the base, raise public awareness of history, care for cultural preservation, and give military heritage a new appearance.

Taoyuan City, located in the northwest of Taiwan, is predominantly hilly terrain. Due to its topography, geology, and geographic features, Taoyuan is renowned as the “Hometown of a Thousand Ponds”. The Sanceng Irrigation System in the region is one of the rare mountain irrigation systems in the country, featuring historical and cross-era irrigation techniques that witness the development of local agriculture and economy. As a result, it has become a cultural landscape. Presenting the irrigation culture of the Sanceng Region in a three-dimensional and concise manner helps readers better understand its content and brings more awareness to this irrigation heritage.

Zhuan Shen - Brick Kiln Storyteller
In the early days, the brick kilns in Guishan, Taoyuan, were important workplaces for many people. Some families even worked and lived at the brick kilns, and numerous shops and homes sprang up around them, creating a bustling community. This indicates that the Bagualiao kilns in Zhangnaoliao were once a very lively and significant place.
However, with the passage of time, the Bagualiao kilns have become outdated and environmentally unfriendly by modern standards. As a result, the Bagualiao kilns in Zhangnaoliao began to gradually decline from the 1950s and 1960s onwards.
Therefore, we plan to use a picture book to recount these fading memories, allowing more people to learn about the Zhangnaoliao Bagualiao kilns and the life stories associated with these kilns.

Ling Ding, Can-Bai - Shoushanyan Guanyin Temple Blessing
The Shoushanyan Guanyin Temple in Taoyuan City, Taiwan, is a center of faith that combines religious, historical, artistic, and traditional cultural beauty. It is a historic religious building that becomes a lively and important place during many local festivals, surrounded by numerous military dependents' villages and settlements.
As times change, this important folk belief is gradually receiving less attention, and people are slowly forgetting the once-thriving centers of faith from previous generations.
Therefore, we hope to use a board game to introduce and explore folk beliefs. By playing the game, people can learn about local culture and increase awareness of the cultural significance of Shoushanyan Guanyin Temple.
