Rediscovering Umemura in the City

Hsu Yung Chang, Du Jian Rong, Sun Yi An

Umemura Japanese Cuisine is a long-established restaurant with over 40 years of history in downtown Taipei. This design is based on the existing foundation of Umemura’s traditional Japanese cuisine and old Japanese architectural style, preserving its culinary and historical roots. While continuing its legacy, the interior discards traditional imagery and is restructured with modern design techniques to meet the tastes and expectations of today’s diners. By blending the old with the new, this design reinterprets the dining experience, offering a contrast to the past and continuing to write an unfinished story that bridges history and innovation.

Car house

Car House
Gao Yi Chen, Xie Ya Yin

In response to global climate change, Taiwan has decided to ban the sale of gasoline-powered vehicles by 2040 to meet carbon reduction goals. Electric and new energy vehicles will replace gasoline-powered cars, prompting a transformation in the traditional automotive industry. For this project, we chose an auto department store as the base of our work. The overall space is designed to be comfortable while incorporating a sense of modern technology. The color scheme predominantly uses white, with touches of red to create a sporty feel. Curved, flowing lines divide the space, mimicking the contours of a car body and guiding customers intuitively through the store, enhancing their shopping experience.

Stone Imagery
Huang Pin Chao, Hsu Jo Han, Chen Yi Chun, Wu Shao Qi, Feng Guan Ru

Temple culture is closely intertwined with our daily lives, and the stone carvings that adorn temples carry historical stories and meanings. These carvings, often symbolizing good fortune, blessings, and protection, are integrated into our poster and packaging designs. We selected two iconic stone carvings from Sanxia Zushi Temple for our design: the "Four Seasons" series and the stone lions. These elements convey the beauty of cultural traditions and temple stone carvings. Known as the "Palace of Oriental Carving Art", Sanxia Zushi Temple’s stone carvings were the subject of our research. Through this project, we hope to raise public awareness of the temple’s stone carving culture, bridging the gap between the general public and this cultural heritage. By combining illustration with stone carving imagery, we aim to ensure that this rich cultural tradition continues to thrive, rather than fade into obscurity.
